Engineering and Public Works Leaders Unite to Tackle Industry Workforce Shortage Crisis
On Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, top engineering and public works associations will come together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to formally establish the Engineering Workforce Consortium (EWC). It is a first-of-its-kind effort to jointly address the critical shortage of skilled professionals in infrastructure development.

The formation of the consortium follows a landmark workforce summit convened by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Recognizing the urgent need to tackle workforce challenges in the industry, the consortium, representing professional societies, trade associations, and academic institutions, is spearheading a collaborative effort to attract, retain, and activate the next generation of engineering and public works professionals.
The mission of the Engineering Workforce Consortium has three core objectives:
- Attracting the next generation of engineering talent
- Retaining the existing workforce in engineering and public works
- Advocating for industry growth and sustainability
The kick-off event will take place at the ACEC offices and will be livestreamed.
The consortium is currently comprised of the following organizations:
- The 50K Coalition
- American Council of Engineering Companies
- American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana
- ACE Mentor
- American Public Works Association
- Army Corps of Engineers
- The American Society of Civil Engineers
- Connecticut Transportation Institute
- Discover Engineering
- Engineers Without Borders
- IEEE USA
- ITE
- National Academy of Construction
- National Society of Professional Engineers
